Over the course of the past few months, the tension that has been building up between the administration and the faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) has become exponentially more intense.
There have been nearly one hundred faculty members who have taken part in a demonstration against the leadership of Director Virendra Kumar Tewari at the educational establishment. At the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, the majority of the faculty members have lodged complaints, the majority of which are based on allegations of nepotism, arbitrary faculty recruitment, and a failure to address key projects.
These projects include the construction of an external campus as well as a hospital that offers a variety of medical specialties. Following the writing of a letter to the Union Ministry of Education by the Indian Institute of Technology Teachers’ Association (IITTA), which accused the director of favoring individuals from his own department and undermining the governance of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, the disagreement continued to escalate and become more contentious.
At the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur), the IITTA expressed concerns regarding the rise of a particular individual within the administration. These concerns centered on the rise of the individual. In the letter, it is stated that during Tewari’s tenure, this particular individual was promoted from a faculty position to multiple leadership roles, which raised questions about favoritism. Tewari was also accused of not responding to concerns raised by faculty and staff at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur).
This included the fact that he ignored letters sent to the director and the Board of Governors. Tewari was accused of not responding to these concerns. It was demanded by the teachers that the individual who will succeed them as director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) should be able to demonstrate both academic excellence and inclusive governance.
Show-cause notices were distributed to 86 members of the faculty who had signed the letter in response to the allegations that were made against them. These members had signed the letter. The teachers were threatened with disciplinary action if they did not provide a response that was satisfactory after receiving these notices. They were also required to provide evidence to back up their claims, and they were required to provide evidence back up their claims.
During an Extraordinary General Body Meeting (EGBM), faculty members made the decision to seek independent legal counsel in response to the IITTA’s request for an extension to respond, which was ultimately denied. This meeting was held in response to the IITTA’s request. In addition to this, they proposed that the legal battle be supported by collective financial contributions. This would ensure that no single individual would be responsible for bearing the financial burden due to the legal battle.
Faculty members at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur have advocated for an approach to administration that is more inclusive and transparent as a result of this issue, which has sparked a wider debate on governance at the institution. They argue that the director’s leadership has led to the formation of divisions within the institution and has failed to address issues of critical importance that are pertinent to both the teaching staff and the students. They also claim that the director has failed to address issues that are relevant to both groups.
Despite the fact that the situation is still developing, the Internet Information Technology Task Force (IITTA) is continuing to put pressure on for a solution. They are requesting that disciplinary actions be withdrawn and that a director be appointed at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) who fosters an environment that is conducive to collaboration and who is attentive to the concerns of all stakeholders.
